The analysis of youth activisms in a global context has gained increasing relevance in the sub-field of social movements. This monograph addresses some of the key challenges and debates surrounding the understanding of young people’s roles in contemporary protests, as well as the various meanings that political participation holds within a generational context. The central points of debate include the consideration of new contexts of politicization, the transnational dynamics of struggles, the emergence of global feminisms, the rise of conservative reactions, (...) and new activist subjectivities associated with processes of individualisation. It also examines the challenges faced by youth activisms in light of the structural constraints imposed by neoliberalism and the opportunities emerging from crisis situations, such as the covid-19 pandemic. This introductory text provides a critical and multifaceted perspective on how young people are reshaping contemporary activism, highlighting the tensions, contradictions and potentialities inherent in this process. Este artículo, producto de un proyecto financiado por la Fundación Cajacanariasy la Asociación Cultural TuSantaCruz, analiza las perspectivas juveniles acerca de la realidad social, política y económica que marcan las diferentes trayectorias de vida de la juventud que habita en Santa Cruz de Tenerife. El uso del concepto de joven que hacemos en este trabajo es más abierto de lo habitual, pues concebimos que la juventud es una categoría social atravesada por cuestiones como el origen social, el nivel de estudios (...) y la clase social, por lo que no es un colectivo caracterizado únicamente por un aspecto biológico-generacional. La metodología utilizada es de tipo cualitativa, concretamente se ha empleado la técnica denominada grupos de discusión.This article, that was a product of a project funded by the Cajacanarias Foundation and the TuSantaCruz Cultural Association, analyzes the youth perspectives of the social, political and economic realities that affect at different life trajectories of youth that lives in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Note that the use made of the concept of youth is more open than usual, because in this communication we conceive that youth is a social category traversed by issues such as social origin, educational level and social class, so this group is not only a group characterized by biological-generational relationships. The literature on autonomous language learning reveals both, scholars’ great enthusiasm for the revolutionary potential of learner autonomy as well as pessimism for its continual depoliticization within higher education. Similar to how ‘learner autonomy’ is still today an unfinished construct that raises considerable confusion among scholars, the critical theory of learner autonomy in the field of language learning remains largely unexplored; and thus, yet to be fully articulated. Building on the relevant literature, this article attempts to provide a coherent and (...) nuanced theoretical framework for the critical practice of learner autonomy in higher education. Results show how the field of language learning is dominated by uncritical and apolitical approaches that render learner autonomy a politically impotent practice. Critical autonomous language learning must be both critically aware—so it can raise students’ awareness of the structural and discursive constraints on their autonomy—and politically active—so it may lead to education reform and social change—, while also aiming at reaching the highest levels of institutional material support and student control possible. We prove that, given a planar embedding of a graph in the sphere, the expansion of the graph structure by predicates encoding vertex separation by simple graph cycles is dp-minimal. This provides a rich natural class of examples of unstable, dp-minimal, and also monadically NIP theories. We also show how to infer the existence of a distal expansion of the theory of the Farey graph.

Civility is formed by social norms that guide our behavior and allow us to interact appropriately with others. These norms affect everyone and are learned through the socialization process. However, in the same process, people also learn gender norms that dictate how men and women should behave, leading to gender stereotypes and differentiated behavioral characteristics. The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between gender and civility, and how we react to those who behave uncivilly given their gender. (...) The results of Study 1 showed that even in a fictional and gender-neutral society, uncivil behaviors were associated with stereotypically masculine characteristics, and those who behaved uncivilly were dehumanized. In Study 2, gender differences were observed in incivility. Women were harsher when facing uncivil transgressors than men, especially if the transgressor was another woman. Our findings support the notion that gender norms are applied to civility, leading those supposedly equal social norms to unequal perceptions and evaluations. (shrink)

En la discusión actual sobre la tolerancia, la teoría política liberal predominante sigue muy ligada a los argumentos que ya se esgrimieron en el pasado en la discusión sobre la tolerancia religiosa. Como el desarrollo de la misma fue una de las raíces del liberalismo, muchos autores liberales asumen que la separación Iglesia/Estado proporciona el paradigma para abordar hoy otro tipo de diferencias. De hecho, eso es lo que ocurre en Liberalismo Político de J. Rawls en el que encontramos semejanzas (...) interesantes con el pensamiento de F. A. Hayek, lo que apoyaría la tesis de que Rawls acabó justificando la tolerancia sobre premisas típicas del liberalismo clásico, probablemente porque el liberalismo no está equipado intelectualmente para defender otro tipo de tolerancia. La comparación entre el pensamiento político de dos grandes liberales, Judith N. Shklar y Friedrich A. Hayek, además de constituir una empresa intelectual sumamente estimulante, resulta muy útil para comprender la evolución del pensamiento político liberal en el siglo XX. Shklar, cuyo reconocimiento internacional está creciendo sin cesar en los últimos años, escribe que el liberalismo se hace contra el totalitarismo como doctrina política que pone por encima de cualquier otro valor la libertad, principio también fundamental en la obra de (...) F. A. Hayek. Por eso, a pesar de que la profesora de Harvard pensaba que su liberalismo era muy diferente al del economista vienés creemos, sin embargo, que existen más semejanzas de las que se podrían deducir a primera vista. Entre otras cosas porque ambos pensadores experimentaron la fragilidad de la libertad y de la democracia en la época que les tocó vivir y decidieron dedicar su trabajo intelectual a estudiar las condiciones en las que se preserva la libertad personal. En ese sentido, en un mundo en el que la democracia liberal sufre de nuevo duros embates, su obra es también de gran actualidad. (shrink)

Al contrario, defendió en sus escritos que las ideas son fuerzas históricas muy poderosas que mueven el mundo. Son las causas de los sucesos políticos y que, entre todas ellas, la más importante es la idea de libertad. Una idea moral entendida como libertad de conciencia de la que nacen todas las demás. (...) Precisamente, por el reconocimiento del protagonismo de las ideas en las sociedades humanas, se le considera hoy en día uno de los mayores exponentes de la disciplina Historia de las ideas políticas. Sin embargo, encontramos en el pensamiento histórico de Acton una serie de afirmaciones polémicas y contradictorias. Reconoce la imperfección de nuestro conocimiento, la complejidad de la historia y de las ideas que contribuyen a explicarla, a la vez que hace del historiador un juez inflexible, objetivo e imparcial que ha de juzgar, no sólo los hechos históricos y las ideas que los provocaron, sino también a los historiadores que los narraron. _ _. Sport often seems to teeter on the edge, on one side of the entertainment industry, on the other of cheating violent aggression: from a make-believe simulacrum of serious play to a nasty chemically enhanced descent into a Hobbesian state of nature. Such perversions lend credibility to reductive views of sport itself as a metonymic feature of capitalism. But that sport as entertainment means fixing it to produce exciting outcomes and amplifying capacities to superhuman proportions, while sport as aggression means treating (...) rules as mere obstacles to brute dominance, shows how far we in fact are from these abysses, even in the days of the Coca Cola/Nike Olympics, Vinny Jones and cricket sledging. In this essay, I try to delineate through history— from Homer to … Gomer?—a common culture of sport and sportsmanship that, with its excesses and perversions, continues to operate as one, albeit complex, ideal of human excellence. Este estudio tiene como objetivo identificar la tipología y los patrones de los mensajes desinformativos relacionados con la salud y la nutrición que se difundieron durante la primera etapa de la pandemia COVID-19 (marzo-noviembre de 2020). Para ello, se realizó un estudio cuantitativo exploratorio con dos tipos de datos. Los primeros provienen del estudio de 95 documentos (artículos científicos) hallados en la base de datos SCOPUS a través de búsquedas booleanas con los términos desinformación, engaño, salud y nutrición. A estos (...) documentos se les aplicó un formulario de registro, indicando los siguientes ítems: a) el tema del artículo (salud o nutrición); b) el tipo de mensaje erróneo (desinformación o engaño); c) el país en el que se realizó el estudio; d) el tipo de participantes (público general, jóvenes, ancianos, profesionales de la salud, estudiantes universitarios); y e) el tipo de canal de información estudiado (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, periódicos impresos, periódicos digitales, plataformas web, televisión, entre otros). Por otro lado, se seleccionaron 95 ingredientes o alimentos que fueron diseminados vía WhatsApp en diferentes bulos en español durante el primer mes de confinamiento (marzo-abril de 2020). Se aplicó un formulario para evaluar el contenido de los engaños, identificando: a) el tipo de sustancia o alimento (fruta, verdura, legumbre, nuez, hierba, entre otros); y b) las fuentes de información a las que se refirió el engaño (autoridades sanitarias, público general, organismos médicos, entre otros). Finalmente, los resultados de ambos estudios cuantitativos concluyeron que el patrón internacional de difusión de bulos fue principalmente sobre la salud en general, y que la desinformación sobre nutrición fue minoritaria, y en el 91% de los casos estuvo relacionada con la ingesta de frutas y verduras, afirmando que podrían prevenir o curar la COVID-19, sin ninguna evidencia científica.
